The rising popularity of injectable treatments has come with the inevitable wave of knock-offs and “bargain” treatments offered by inexperienced injectors. While BOTOX Cosmetic injections at our Des Moines practice are always performed by qualified providers and purchased from authorized distributors, this isn’t the case everywhere you go.
Today, we’re breaking down the dangers of cutting corners when it comes to injectables and explaining why your safety is always worth the price.
Knock-Off Products
One way people choose to save on BOTOX treatments is by opting for unregulated off-brand products. When a product is not purchased from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, it’s impossible to keep track of the product, its contents, and how it has been handled. These products don’t go through FDA regulations, meaning you can’t be sure what’s in it, where it’s been, or whether it’s safe to put in your body.
The same goes for products purchased internationally. Providers are sometimes able to offer lower prices because they’re paying less for products shipped from other countries. However, it’s actually illegal to buy BOTOX from outside of the U.S. If you’re buying a product shipped in from outside U.S. borders, that means it has flown under the FDA’s radar, and there’s no way to know the product is effective or safe.
Unqualified Injectors
When performed correctly, BOTOX injections pose little risk for undesired side effects. However, improper administration can lead to complications such as infections, an unnaturally frozen appearance, or even worse. “Bargain” prices offered at day spas may indicate that you’re not paying for or receiving expert care. That is not a cost worth cutting. Learn more in our previous blog post.
Cheaper prices may also be due to the provider diluting the product or splitting syringes over several appointments. Not only does this mean you’re not getting a potent product, but it also means the product has been opened and tampered with, unnecessarily exposing it to contaminants.
Choosing a Provider
When it comes to finding a provider you can trust to keep you safe and deliver great results, there are a few things you should look for, including:
- A practice that is overseen by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
- Sealed and labeled packaging purchased from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor.
- An injector with excellent qualifications and experience.
Koch Facial Plastic Surgery is one of the top providers of BOTOX injections in Iowa, making us a trusted source for the treatment. Our injector Pam Banyas is a certified physician assistant with more than a decade of experience in aesthetic medicine.
