If you’re like most people, you probably have an area or two of your body that you just cannot slim down, despite a regimen of healthy eating and regular exercise. Luckily, you can often get rid of those troublesome fat “pooches” without surgery or downtime with CoolSculpting® at our West Des Moines medical spa.
CoolSculpting helps reduce small pockets of unwanted fat in a variety of areas, including the upper arms, thighs, under the buttocks, and the abdomen. Although it can also help diminish the appearance of a double chin, facial liposuction can address more extensive fat in the jowls, chin, and neck.
But don’t just take our word for it, keep reading to learn about the CoolSculpting experience from one of our patients.

Q. Tell us a little about why you decided to try CoolSculpting.
A. As a long-time patient of Koch Facial Plastic Surgery & Spa, I have a tremendous amount of respect for, and trust in, this team of professionals. I believed if they were willing to offer the service, I didn’t need to second-guess my safety or the treatment’s efficacy. I’ve been seeing the promotions for CoolSculpting and decided to give it a try on my outer thighs. This is an area that is particularly troublesome for me.
Q. What was the experience like?
A. I scheduled my appointment with Emily, the CoolSculpting technician, and was told to expect an hour and 15 minutes per cycle, or treatment area. I arrived at the office and was taken to the CoolSculpting treatment room which is bright and comfortable. Emily (who has years of experience, advanced training, and credentialing in CoolSculpting) started the process by having me change into disposable shorts—you can wear your own loose, comfortable shorts if you prefer. Then Emily marked the area on my outer thighs that she would be treating.
After I was marked, Emily had me get positioned comfortably in the treatment chair while she prepared my skin for the placement of the cooling panel applicator. A clear gel patch was placed between my skin and the applicator as a protective barrier. For this area of the body, the applicator doesn’t have suction, rather it’s securely fastened with a large Velcro strap, so the cooling panel doesn’t shift.
Once the applicator was in place, Emily hit start on the CoolSculpting machine, and the timer was off and running! I got comfortable with a book to pass the time. At first, I didn’t feel anything. About 10 minutes in, I could feel the intense cold begin, and the area felt numb. There was no pain or discomfort. We repeated the process on the other side. At the end of the treatment, the area was massaged to increase circulation. I dressed and was on my way back to work (there’s no downtime!).
Q. Did you notice anything in the days following your treatment?
A. For 3 to 4 days following my treatment, I could feel a slight stinging sensation in the areas that were treated. All very tolerable with minimal to no discomfort.
Q. When will you notice results?
A. Emily was great about managing my expectations. She told me to expect results in 6 to 8 weeks, so long as I am doing my part to stay healthy, as well. (After all, CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment.) Emily also explained that, in most cases, you can expect a 20 to 25% reduction in fat cells to the treated area (according to several studies). It’s common to need more than one treatment or cycle to reach your desired results.
