As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, I’m often asked whether RHA filler vs. JUVÉDERM is better for the lips. The truth is that both RHA Redensity™ and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® have unique advantages, but their formulations and injection techniques make them ideal for different lip enhancement goals. Here’s a look at how they compare and who may benefit most from each.

Similarities Between RHA Redensity and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA

Both Redensity and VOLBELLA:

  • Contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body that retains moisture and adds volume.
  • Offer nonsurgical lip enhancement with minimal downtime.
  • Provide soft, natural-looking results that can be dissolved if desired.
  • Address lines around the mouth (perioral lines)

These qualities make them especially appealing for patients who want a subtle boost in volume or to smooth away lip lines without looking “overdone.”

How RHA Redensity Differs From JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA

RHA Redensity is part of TEOXANE’s Resilient Hyaluronic Acid (RHA) Collection, which uniquely adapts to facial movement. Unlike traditional fillers, RHA Redensity is formulated for dynamic areas—like around the mouth—where the skin moves constantly.

We typically use RHA Redensity around the lips rather than directly injecting it into the lips. (We can use another RHA filler, RHA® 2, to give the lips themselves elegant, flexible volume). Redensity is especially effective for addressing:

  • Perioral lines (also known as lipstick lines or smoker’s lines)
  • Feathering at the lip border
  • Mild volume loss at the edges of the mouth

Because of its flexible structure, RHA Redensity moves naturally with your facial expressions, making it ideal for patients looking to soften lines around the mouth without stiffening the area.

How JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA Differs From RHA Redensity

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA is a popular choice for direct lip augmentation. It’s a smooth, silky gel that offers subtle volume while also improving the appearance of fine lines in and around the lips.

Ideal candidates for VOLBELLA typically want to:

  • Enhance the volume and shape of their lips
  • Achieve a hydrated, pillowy look
  • Improve symmetry or definition in the lip area

VOLBELLA is also a great option for first-time lip filler patients who want noticeable yet natural-looking results.

The BOTOX® Lip Flip: A Non-Filler Alternative

Not quite ready for filler? A BOTOX lip flip may be a great alternative. By relaxing the muscles around the upper lip, a lip flip subtly rolls the lip upward, creating the appearance of added volume without actually adding it.
