It’s no secret that your body changes after having children. But seeing the physical toll pregnancy takes—and being essentially helpless to reverse the changes—is frustrating for many women. Saggy abdominal skin and deflated breasts don’t respond no matter how many hours you spend at the gym or how many desserts you skip.
If this sounds familiar, you may wonder if a mommy makeover is right for you. (After all, you’re reading this blog post for a reason.) In this post, I’ll answer several questions patients ask about the procedure.
What Is a Mommy Makeover?
There isn’t a definitive answer to this question because I customize the procedure to suit the needs and goals of each patient. A mommy makeover includes a suite of plastic surgery procedures designed to address physical changes after having children. These typically include body contouring and breast enhancement procedures.
What Specific Procedures Does a Mommy Makeover Include?
As I mentioned, these can vary from patient to patient. The standard mommy makeover includes a tummy tuck, liposuction, and a breast lift or augmentation. Although, many patients choose to combine a breast lift with implants to improve both the shape and size of their breasts. We may also include a labiaplasty in a mommy makeover if you’re concerned about enlarged or elongated labia.
Can a Mommy Makeover Include BBL?
Some patients ask about having a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) during mommy makeover surgery. Technically, a surgeon may combine a BBL with other mommy makeover procedures. A BBL uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat. I then inject the harvested fat into the buttocks to enhance its shape. Performing a BBL during a mommy makeover has some drawbacks, however. First, surgery may require too much time to be considered safe. Second, the BBL could complicate your tummy tuck recovery, which I wrote about in an earlier blog post.
What Will the Scars Look Like After a Mommy Makeover?
Because a mommy makeover combines multiple procedures, a surgeon makes incisions in different areas of the body. If the procedure includes a breast lift, I make incisions on the underside of the breasts. A tummy tuck incision extends from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. We provide patients with specific incision care instructions to minimize the visibility of scarring. Scars typically fade over time.
Can I Have Children After a Mommy Makeover?
It’s physically possible to get pregnant after a mommy makeover, but surgeons generally recommend waiting until you don’t plan to have more children before scheduling the procedure. Pregnancy likely will undo all the changes accomplished by getting a mommy makeover.
Are Mommy Makeovers Safe?
As with any surgical procedure, a mommy makeover has some associated risks. However, you can minimize risks by choosing a qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon who will perform the procedure in a certified surgical facility. It’s essential for patients to undergo a thorough consultation to discuss their medical history and expectations.
