In our West Des Moines office, dermaplaning is a favorite procedure among women and men from Ankeny, Ames, and other nearby areas who want to reduce signs of aging and damage or simply want to refresh their complexions. Here, learn more about dermaplaning and why it may be an effective addition to your own skincare routine.

About Dermaplaning

Stronger and more controlled than at-home products, clinical dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation that can significantly improve the condition of the skin without irritation or damage. The procedure is comfortable and brief. A sterile surgical blade is used to lightly slough away the outermost layers of skin as well as the vellus hair, or “peach fuzz,” that coats the skin. While dermaplaning is a great option for overall skin improvement, it can also effectively reduce the appearance of the following skin concerns:

  • Rough, dry skin
  • Certain types of hyperpigmentation or brown spots
  • Light signs of aging, such as fine lines
  • Acne scars

Dermaplaning Procedures

Each dermaplane treatment lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. Your provider begins by cleaning the treatment area. He or she then uses a sterile blade to gently exfoliate your skin. No anesthetic is required since the treatment affects only the outermost layers of your skin. At the end of the procedure, your provider gently wipes away the sloughed off skin cells and “peach fuzz”, revealing a fresh, vibrant skin surface.

Dermaplaning Cost

At our West Des Moines practice, the price of dermaplaning starts at $80.

Recovery

Because dermaplaning is noninvasive, it has a low risk of associated complications. In fact, it’s one of the safest skin rejuvenation procedures available. Some patients report skin redness or dryness after treatment, but this is temporary. Very rarely, the skin can be nicked during a procedure. This typically heals almost on the spot. (Remember, most men use a blade on their faces almost every day and nick themselves without any long-term effects.) After your treatment, we recommend using moisturizers and sunscreens liberally, in addition to avoiding unprotected sun exposure for a few days.

There is no downtime for this “lunch hour” procedure, and most people return to their regular activities immediately.

Common Questions

Will the hair on my face grow back darker and thicker after a dermaplane?

No. Although this is a common myth, the hair on your face is not the same as the hair on your legs or bikini area. It will not be affected or changed by dermaplaning in any way.

What should I NOT expect from my dermaplane treatment?

Regular dermaplane treatments can improve or eliminate superficial skin problems. It works on all skin types and colors to produce subtle changes, causing no skin color change or scarring. However, it is not effective for problems such as stretch marks, keloids, wrinkles, or deep acne scars. Laser treatments and medical grade chemical peels remain the best options for these conditions.

Can I combine dermaplaning with other treatments?

Yes! Not only can you combine a dermaplane procedure with chemical peels or laser treatments, we encourage it. By removing the outermost layer of the epidermis, a dermaplane treatment allows whatever rejuvenating treatment that follows to have a deeper, more lasting effect.
